Manual setup
Edit config.toml and auth.json yourself if you'd rather not use the script
The script is recommended
The one-command install performs every step below correctly and backs up your old config automatically. Only go manual if you really need to.
Install the Codex CLI
npm install -g @openai/codexEdit config.toml
Open (or create) the config file for your OS:
Path:
~/.codex/config.tomlReplace the entire file content with:

In the same directory as config.toml, create auth.json:

auth.json = codex login
Writing the key into auth.json has exactly the same effect as running codex login and pasting
the key — and it is shared by the CLI, the VS Code extension and the Codex app.
On macOS/Linux, restrict read access to the file holding your key:
chmod 600 ~/.codex/auth.json
